![]() I went from not drop of oil leaking for 10 plus year to what I had. Disturbing part is I never found an obvious problem. Before repair about 1 oil drop every 5 secs which adds up. Ran for a total of 1 hr on muffs and not a drop of oil or coolant in the bilge. Press on dampener and reinstall the rest of the jewelry.Ĥ- Get running. Get oil pan back in place and all bolts tight. One I want to flush out the dirty oil after the repair and 2 thought the weight of the oil would help drop the pan a bit.ģ- Clean the oil off the old pan gasket as good as possible and install new cover with a nice bead of Loctite 598 RTV across the bottom front. The goal is to not disturb the oil pan and do in place in the boat. Obviously when apart I will look for a cause - cracked cover or oil pan etc. Clean up surfaces and install new cover ? What is the best sealant do you use between the oil pan to cover joint ? Black RTV ? Any other info I should know ? Seems like not too bad of a job to do. So remove water pump, remove dampener, remove 8 bolts and throw away old cover. I will also buy a dampener puller and installer tool for $50. Merc wanted $260 and AM automotive is $60. So I learned you just replace the whole cover which I have never heard of before. I have a 2004 5.7 carb with the plastic cover. Like a few others this time of year I have decided instead of hauling a bunch of tools to the dock and forgetting at least one at home I will do it this fall when the boat is home over winter. It is dripping enough that I had to top up my oil mid season for the first time ever. Oil pan bolts I could get at and cover bolts are tight. ![]() I confirmed with a mirror that it is the timing cover to oil pan joint.
